Description of the property

DATE_ The Rider Tavern is on Stafford Street (Northside Turnpike) just opposite the intersection with Northside Road. It is located on 2½ acres of land which are surrounded by open fields and pastures of neighboring farms. The Rider Tavern (c.1797) measures 90 feet by 40 feet, and is three stories in height. It stands on a foundation of dry fieldstone construction, topped with granite slabs backed with brick on the ends. On the south (front) and west sides no foundation appears above grade, but the east end reveals a full basement with a brick exterior wall. The exterior walls of the building are clapboard with cornerboards, although as- phalt siding applied in the 1950's now covers the original material. Only on the eastern third of the rear wall of the building are the clapboards exposed. Mater- ials used in the construction of the Tavern are of local origin.

The nails are said to be from the forge of Fortus Hammond and the granite cut from a quarry in South Charlton. The main facade of the Rider Tavern has two entrances, each approximately 30 feet from either end of the building. The east door retains its original features with its large keystone, heavy quoins, and projecting moided cornice. The western entrance was identical to the eastern, but was remodeled in 1939. Its keystone and cornice remain, however. There are a total of 26 windows on the facade, 6 on the east elevation and 6 on the west. The first and second story windows on the east end of the facade have heavily keystoned lintels. These have been removed on much of the rest of the building. Third-story windows are set close under the eaves. Sash lights vary on the first floor, and are 12 over 12 on the second floor, and 8 over 8 on the third.

US5T10 abl The Rider Tavern has a hip roof surfaced with asphalt shingles. Originally the bullding had a roof which floged one foot from the center to the eaves. The IOOI was covered with gravel and tar, and on it were placed beds and pots of flowers. Water was conveyed to the roof garden through a line of logs which led to a spring in the hill on the north side of the house. the original roof construction are still in evidence beneath the present hip roof which was added around 1842. Three brick chimneys rise through the roof. The main chimney in the eastern part of the building carries flues for seven fireplaces and measures 12 feet by 15 feet at its base. Iwo smaller chimneys pierce the western section of the roof. In the basement level is the former kitchen, which contains a large fireplace, 10 feet wide and 5 feet high, with stone lintel, bake oven and cooking crane.

In the back of the east chimney foundation in the basement is a vaulted warming room fitted out with shelves next to the flue. From here food was brought to the dumb waiter and drawn up to the main floor dining rooms. The west chimney base is also vaulted, but open at both ends and fitted with doors for storage. The west door leads to the original dining room and barroom, and from the main hall a stairway goes to the second floor ballroom and upper chambers.

Original stenciling has recently been uncovered in the 20 by 60 foot ballroom. On the east side were the office, receiving parlor, principal upper chamber and two additional bed chambers, as well as living quarters for the innkeeper. All of the rooms retain their original woodwork and hardware, with the exception of two mantels which have been removed in second floor chambers. A few doorknobs were installed on doors in the east two rooms. The Rider Tavern has recently been acquired by the Charlton Historical Society who with professional help are currently restoring the building for use as society headquarters, community center, and two apartments.

Statement of significance

/ARCHITECT The Rider Tavern is significant as one of the major inns on the Stafford and wor- cester Turnpike and as the scene of a visit by General Lafayette during his 1824-25 tour of the United States. It is also significant for the unique architectural features which have been preserved in what is one of the best examples of its period in Charlton and certainly the most outstanding Federal inn in the surrounding area. The Rider Tavern was begun 'in 1797 by Eli Wheelock, but before completion was sold to two wealthy brothers William and Captain Isiah (sic) Rider. The Tavern was located on the principal stage line, the Stafford and Worcester Turnpike, and was the only inn on this section of the turnpike between Sturbridge and Worcester. The Rider Tavern was in North Charlton, or Northside Village, which contained among other important town buildings a post office, a church, and school.

In its situation on an important stage line, the Tavern was the center of hospitality and activity in North Charlton. One of the most-remembered events which occurred at the Rider Tavern was a visit by the famous General Lafayette. Accompanied by an entourage of fifty horsemen, the Frenchman stopped at the inn where a gala celebration was held in his honor. He was greeted by an old friend and local resident, Mr. Dunbar. The Rider Tavern is also significant for a number of its interesting architectural seatuxesey massacguset s The original roof was flat and supported the only roof garden in central and eastern Massachusetts outside of Boston. Although the roof garden is no longer in existence, its structure is clearly visible in the attic. The ballroom on the second floor of the west part of the building is also of interest, and its handsome stenciling is now in view.

Dances and lyceums were held in this room even into the 1950's. Today the Rider Tavern continues to serve as the focal point of the Northside Village, and it is the most impressive building of its period in the rural town of Charlton.

UTAKIS Of the Telegram Staff CHARLTON - The Charl- ton Historical Society, ambi- tiously but unhurriedly, plans to restore the Rider Tavern to the way it was in 1825. The project will take five to 10 years to complete, said William O. Hultgren, restora- tion committee chairman. He said the society "hopes we'll have enough support to follow through with our plans." The group recently acquired one third of the building as a gift from the heirs of Harold Culver. The other portion was obtained "through a generous agreement with Richard H. Green of Spencer," Hultgren said.

The soclety has invited 80 persons to a special open house at 2 p.m. next Sunday in the 24-room tavern at Staf- ford Street and Northside Road. A public open house will be held in June. Hultgren said the program . will include talks by five society members on that group's organization, and ac- tivities, the Rider Tavern his- tory, tavern architecture, the tavern as a social center and an outline of the society's res- toration plans.
