6D.213 MAY 14 1976 IEFE EnglanB Nemif Spurr House in Charlion Accepted as Historic Site CHARLTON - The John Spurr House on Main street has been accepted for in- clusion in the National Pegis- ter of Historic Places by the Hisiorical Commission. The Spurr House, the prop- erty of Mrs. James Tansey, is the only structure of 18th century vintage in the Charl- ton Common area. The accepiance of the house W2S recommended by the state Historical Commission, according to Paul Guzzi, Sec- Tetary of State, who also serves as commission chair- man. The house was the home of Maj. Gen. John Spurr, a leader in i town affairs who participated in the Boston Tea Party and Revolutionary War encounters. A feature of the house is the hinged paneled common wall between the second siory north chambers which can be moved up to create a larger room for social functions.
In politics, town records show General Spurr to be a strong Jeffersonian Demo- crat, opposing the Federalists. Spurr was elected to the Gen- eral Court in 1805 and served to 1811. His sons followed his governmental service. John Spurr Jr. served as a major in the militia, a justice of the peace, a state represen- tative from 1820 to 1824 and state senator and representa- tive to the Constitutional Con- venion in 1820. He operated a store and a hotel in Charlion Center for many years. Another son, Samuel D. Spurr, lived in the Charlton homestead and also served as a state representative and as colonel in the militia. He mas active in the Universalist Socieiy. He mored to Worces- ter, where he operaled a store and mas a trustee of the Wior- cester Seminary and a cirec- tor of Worcester's firsi Horti- cultural Soctety.
