Description of the property

Ihe Greendale Improvement Society Building, erected in 1900, is a two story building of wood frame construction. It is located at 480 West Boylston Street and is surrounded by a lawn and a chain link fence. The five bay facade of the house is dominated by a projecting, pedimented central bay. The pediment of the bay is formed by a roof dormer containing double windows topped by a wooden fanlight decoration and is reminicent of the projecting bay found in Georgian style houses. A large classical portico extends across the first floor of the bay. The portico is composed of a latticework base, six square-based classical columns and a flat, slightly overhanging roof. The portico is reached by six wooden steps and shelters wooden double doors. The right bay of the facade is formed by a square, three story tower.

There are triple round-arched windows in the third floor of the tower, and It 1s topped by a gently sloping pyramidal roof. The main roof of the house is hipped and covered with asphalt shingles. Modillions articulate the slight overhang of the roof. Wood shingles, painted gray, cover the house and its trim is painted white. Three functional floors comprise the interior of the building. basement contains the kitchen and a large dining room. The first floor is divided into two rooms: a small formal meeting room with handsome fireplace and a large room that was used as a library. The second floor houses an auditorium. The interior walls of the house are plastered and have wooden wainscotting. The ceilings are of pressed metal, and the floors are covered with maple strip.

Statement of significance

/ARCHITECT The significance of the Greendale Improvement Society Building is derived from the important role that the members of the Society have played in the social and humanitarian programs in Worcester. It is a fine example of a simple building that housed a nineteenth century organization concerned with the general welfare of the citizens of the community - planting trees, providing rubbish collection, plowing snow and providing fire protection. Many of these respon- sibilities are assumed by the city and state government, but the Greendale Improvement Society still plays a significant role in maintaining the welfare of the citizens of the community. The history of the Greendale Improvement Society began on January 17, 1895 when a meeting was held to consider the organization of a society seeking the general welfare of the citizens of Greendale.

This organization was chartered by the State of Massachusetts on August 5, 1896 in the name of the Greendale Improvement Association, After many meetings, the original association disbanded in favor of the Greendale Village Improvement Society, turning over all the funds and property on September 2, 1897. The original society had formed a committee to research the possibility of a building to be used for its services. In anticipation of acquiring this property, a new charter was applied for in the name of the Greendale Village Improvement Society. This charter was approved by the Massachusetts State Legislature, Acts of 1897, Chapter 259, on April 10, 1897. The Kendrick family, a prominent family in the area, transferred title Society in 1897.

The members of the Society raised the funds for the building in many They had bean suppers, socials, dances, lawn parties, enter- tainment programs and solicited private contributions. On April 19, 1900, ground was broken, stone boundaries were laid, and the property surveyed. The building was dedicated the last week in October, 1900. One of the first functions of this Society was to plant trees to beautify the area.. They built and maintained cinder roads which they plowed in the winter with their horse and plow (hopefully, when it snowed). A rubbish collection was made available to the membership at a minimal fee and a permanent fire station was requested for Green- dale in 1897. Following the Second World War, the building was used for a short time for a veteran's organization.
