Statement of significance

Hancock County's First Courthouse was built in 1833 and is significant because it is believed to be the oldest building in Findlay. It has served an amazing number of uses a dentist's office, a variety of stores, a hotel and several residences. It was the first house to have natural gas for lighting and cooking prior to the Great Gas Boom Era. Although the structure has been moved it still retains its original appearance as it is style is plain and essentially functional except for the eloquent entranceway. door has a rectangular transom with sidelights and is surrounded with a frontpiece The many uses and changes of this old structure is well documented which adds to its historical significance. He ran this hotel until his death latter changed its name to the Carr House, which he carried on til 1862, when he sold the lot and removed the building to South Main St., near the northeast corner of South dental office, using the natural gas which flowed from a well on his lot for lighting. John L. Downing conducted a drug store in the building according to 1881 newspaper the old structure to its present location at 819 Park Street.
