In. November: of 1942, the Massachusetts served as the flagship of the covering group of Allied ships involved in Operation Torch, the invasion of North Africa. During this engagement, Big Mamie became the first American ship to fire on the opposing forces when it returned a salvo from the Jean Bart, the newest battleship in the Vichy French navy. The Massachusetts put the Jean Bart out of action with five direct hits. No. casualties were reported on the U.S. ship, although it sustained several hits.
- Oddly enough, the Mas- sachusetts not oniy fired the first big naval shot of :the Second World War but also the last! Assigned to the Pacific theatre of war, the bat- tleship took, part in many operations and raids between 1943 and 1945. It fired the last recorded 16- inch shell of World War II at the Japanese island of Honshu. The great ship made its last voyage in June of 1965 when it sailed to Bat- tleship Cove to take up permanent residence as the official World War II memorial of the common- wealth. It contains an illuminated list of heroic war dead and also serves as an educational re- source.
