Description of the property

The Pest House is a simple eighteenth century farmhouse that stands on a triangular shaped lot at the intersection of Fairhaven Road and Route 2. The house faces Fairhaven Road, a small residential thoroughfare and is pro- tected from the traffic on Route 2 by a tall hedge. It is surrounded by a large lawn, several matuce trees and trimmed shrubbery which combine to create a rural setting. Diagonally across from the house, on the opposite side of Route 2, is a small cemetery. It is a two and one half story wood frame structure, built upon a low fieldstone foundation. The facade of the house is symmetrical and of five bays. It is composed of six over six windows that are flanked by fluted shutters and a central doorway. The wooden door is graced with sidelights and topped with a simple entablature. The house is covered with four inch clapbeard and has a ridge roof.

A Large dormer has been built into the roof off of the rear of the house, making the house's back elevation a full three stories. A modern one story, one room addition also extends from the rear of the house. The roof of the addition is ridged, and casement windows and sliding glass doors light the room.

Statement of significance

/ARCHITECT The Pest House is significant for the role it played in the medical history of the town of Concord. In 1792, when an outbreak of smallpox occurred, this house, then known as the Ephraim Potter House, was used as the local hospital. Throughout the eighteenth century the fear of an outbreak of smallpox plagued the New England towns. When the first case of the disease was discovered in Concord in 1792, one hundred and thirty people were innoculated. However, the disease spread to several other houses in the town and a hospital was needed to treat the victims. The Potter House was chosen, in part because Sarah Potter was already infected with smallpox; and those stricken were brought there to be treated by the town's three doctors. and eight from contagion. i.
