Description of the property

The Captain Benjamin Locke House is located in the residential Arlington Heights neighborhood. The house is sited close to the street on a simply landscaped narrow house lot. The 2½ story, ridge roof house has a central hall, 1 room deep plan, with a central chimney and an asphalt shingled roof. The house is sheathed in clapboards with plain wide cornerboards and simple box cornice. Fenestration throughout, with the exception of the attic story 6/6 windows, is 4/4 and framed by a simple architrave. The facade is 5 bays wide. The center entry is a l story ridge roofed enclosed porch. On the side elevations of the porch are small 2/2 windows. Side elevations are 1 bay deep. Attached to the center of the rear elevation is a 1½ story ridge roof ell with end chimney. A one story shed roof porch runs the depth of the ell on the east side.

The original portion of the house is believed to have been built about 1720, as indi- cated by structural evidence which shows a 1 story, single bay structure with side hall. The present house was existing, minus the ell, when it was converted into a meetinghouse in 1780. Interior partitions on the ground floor and the chimney were removed. The present chimney and interior finish date from the 1790 refitting as a residence. The el1 was added about 1820 and the enclosed entry porch was added in the mid-19th century. The shed roof porch was built about 1900. The house is presently fitted with aluminum storm sash.

Statement of significance

BUILDER/ARCHITECT The Captain Benjamin Locke House is significant for its associations with the Locke family and the growth and development of Arlington. The original portion of the house was built about 1720 when Francis Locke moved from Woburn to Menotomy (West Cambridge, now Arlington). The family later built a larger house further west on Appleton Street. The family had large landholdings in the area. Benjamin Locke, grandson of Francis Locke, served on the Prudential Committee and Association. He later commanded 50 men at the Battles of Lexington and Bunker Hill. Locke, in 1780, was chairman of a committee establishing Baptish Society in Menotomy (now Arlington). Members were opposed to paying ministerial taxes for the Congregational Church.

(Congregationalism was the established faith in Massachusetts until 1833.) In 1784 Locke barely escaped arrest by the collector of ministerial taxes. The first minister of the new Baptist Society boarded at Locke's house during his probationary period. In 1781 the Society purchased the house from Locke for 100 silver dollars. Locke retained first option for purchase. Joseph Shaw, tenant and member of the Society, was paid $14 in compensation for moving. In 1790 the house was sold back to Locke for $60. One month later, Locke had sold the house to his son for $66. The house remained in the possession of the Locke family and their descendants until 1975.
