Description of the property

The Charles Lovejoy House is a free-standing Colonial Revival style house of rectangular plan, sited on a narrow lot of approximately eight-three feet frontage. It is located near Lynn's downtown area and is closely surrounded by other residential buildings of lesser quality and some commercial structures. The structure stands on a foundation of rock-faced granite blocks. have matched boarding. the visible portions of which are covered with asphalt shingles. (A lower sloped central section is not visible from ground level.) Entrances to the house are located slightly north of center on the street facade (west), centered on the north end-wal1 and at the house's southeast corner through a recessed two-story porch. The Lovejoy House has no wings or ells; to its rear (east) is a one-story metal garage (built 1923). Thefacade ofthe Lovejoy Housefaces west on Broad Street and is asymmetrical.

The main focus is a two-story, projecting entry pavilion set slightly north of center. Approached by a wooden staircase (five steps) with iron railings (perhpas original), the pavilion is framed by two pairs of unfluted Corinthian pilasters which support an undecorated entablature and a modillioned cornice. Above the cornice is a pediment con- taining an oculus surrounded by an ornate, neo-Baroque frame and fobiate carving, apparently made of wood. Set between the pairs of pilasters at the first story is an elliptically arched entry. The entry is framed by panelled pilasters and contains intricately leaded, clear glass fan and side lights (southern side light has been replaced). The door consists of six slightly raised panels and is set between stiles which are decorated by channeling in a herring-bone pattern.

Separating the door from the fan light is a wooden band decorated with evenly spaced groups of four channels. Above the entry frame is an elliptical projecting balcony and floor length casement window which lights a landing in the stairhall. The balcony has a railing of vase-turned balusters which terminates at either end in vase-turned posts with spiralled shafts and urn-finial tops. The window has a paneled frame capped by acanthus-leaf consoles. The window consists of six large panes and has louvred shutters folded back into the recesses on each side. North of the pavilion there are two evenly spaced windows: with six-over-one sash at the first story and an oval window and a window with eight-over-eight sash at the second story.

South of the pavilion is a tripartite window made up of six-over- one sash at the first story and a single window of eight-over-eight sash at the second story. Window frames on the facade consist of moulded surrounds surmounted by dentiled entablatures. The facade is framed by a wooden water table above the foundation, raised-panel pilasters at the corners and a modillioned cornice. (These same details frame the house's three other elevations). There is one dormer on each side of the central pavilion, each with three-over-three sash and a pedimented gable (identical to all other dormers on the house). Extending along the top of the hip roof and masking its low-sloping central section is a railing of vase-turned balusters set in groups of twenty between larger turned posts with urn finials. These windows are symmetrically placed in reference to an entry located on the wall's center at the first story. The entry consists of a panelled and glazed door (east side) and a window of four-over-two sash (west side) surmounted by an elliptical awning set on curved, solid brackets. The entry is approached by astraight rin of stairs with a railing of cylindrical balusters set into turned posts with urn finials. Centered on the roof is a single dormer, identical to those of the facade.

Facing a small garden, the east elevation is asymmetrical in design and largely unornamented. Centered on the wall is a six-sided bay window of two-story height with four windows of six-over-one sash at each story. North of the bay window at the first story are one small window and one tripartite window, both with six-over- one sash. At the second story are one small window of six-over-one sash and a larger window of eight-over-two sash. South of the bay window,: at the first story is a larger tripartite window of six-over-one sash surmounted at the second story by a single window of eight-over-two sash. Al1 windows of the east wall are set in moulded architrave frames. Cut into the main block of the house at the southeast corner is a two-story porch, enclosed by screens. The porch is supported by granite piers and is contained beneath the roof of the house.

At both the first and second stories are railings of vase-turned balusters. Symmetrically placed on the roof are three dormers, identical to those of the facade. Just north of the bay window at ground level is a bulkhead. The house's south elevation is divided nearly in half by the recessed porch (described abaze) ubis occted s ithe eastemne section oss the shutporah at boese doriee ds from consist of eight panes of glass (same size as other south wall windows) set over four over-sized panes, the whole divided vertically down the center to create two doors. The wester half of the south wall contains one window of eight-over-two sash at both stories, set in capped frames, identical to those of the facade. Centered on In virtually unaltered condition, the Lovejoy House interior contains an excellent variety of neo-classical decorative details.

Among the most noteworthy is the house's stairway which rises in three stages along the west wall (facade). In addition to ornately turned neo-Federal balusters, the stairway has decorated tread-ends and a newel1 post with a reversed double spiral. The doorway leading to the stairhall from the entrance foyer is decorated by egg-and-dart mouldings and is capped by a frieze of alternating lotus flowers and anthemia. The three major rooms of the first story (located on the east and south walls) have neo-classical mantelpieces of which the dining room's is the most ornate, possessing an earred overmantel with a running-dog border and pilasters with acanthus-leaf capitals. At the southwest corner of the second floor i5 a Colonial Revival style library with raised-pane walls, added to the house in the 1920s or 1930s.

Statement of significance

/ARCHITECT James Kelley STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE One of the most distinguished and well-preserved examples of Colonial Revival style architecture in Lynn, the Charles Lovejoy House was built in 1893-1894 from designs by James Kelley, a Boston architect. Kelley's original plans are currently in the possession of the Greater Lynn Arts Association. Charles Lovejoy (1847-1932), a prominent local physician, was a native of Nashua, New Hampshire who graduated from Harvard College in 1868 and from Harvard Medical Schoo1 in 1872. By 1873, Lovejoy had moved to Lynn and established a private medical practice. In 1874, and again in 1880, Lovejoy made trips to Europe to study medicine in Dublin, London, Leipzig, Vienna and Wurtzburg. In the mid-1880s, Lovejoy was instrumental in founding the Lynn Hospital and served for four years as its first superintendent..

The site of the present house was purchased by Lovejoy around 1887-1888 at which time it contained two smaller buildings, one of which served as Lovejoy's homé and office until 1893, when both buildings were moved to the rear of the lot (Both have since been demolished). Designed to contain a separate office suite at its northwest corner, the Lovejoy House was' occupied by Charles Lovejoy from its completion in 1894 or 1895 until his death in 1932, after which the house passed into the possession of his daughter, Mrs. Mary Kirkpatrick whose estate presently owns the property. As a result of its continuous occupation by the same family, the Lovejoy House has been maintained in nearly original condition.

Although not a resident of Lynn, James Kelley,architect of the Lovejoy House, became an important figure in Lynn architecture during the 1890's as the designer of some of the city's first Classical Revival and Colonial Revival style buildings at a time when local architects were working almost exclusively in the Queen Anne and Romanesque Revival styles. Kelley's architectural training was received in the office of Boston architects, Sturgis and Brigham, where Kelley rose from office boy to become head draughtsman by the early 1880s. Around 1884-1885, Kelley left Sturgis and Brigham to establish a private architectural practice from his home at 75 Pinckney Street, Boston. Around 1890, Kelley bought #57 Mount Vernon Street, Boston, a Federal row house, in which he lived and worked until his death in 1929. In 1977, following the death of Mrs.

Kirkpatrick and the announcement of the imminent sale of the Lovejoy House, the Greater Lynn Arts Association (a non-profit corporation) was formed for the combined purpose of creating a community arts center and to preserve the house: 9
