Description of the property

CHECK ONE XORIGINAL SITE _MOVED DATE. The Dalton House occupies the northeast corner of State and Garden Streets in the commercial district of Newburyport. Slightly less than one acre, the property is bordered by a white fence with Colonial motif flat sawn balusters and capped posts along State Street and a picket fence with cap rail along Garden Street. Michael Dalton purchased three acres of land from Gideon Bartlett of Amesbury in May of 1746. The parcel, located in what was then Newbury, cost 1600 pounds (old tenor). Michael constructed the present house, a spacious barn and a courtyard sometime during the next two years. The barn was removed and most of the property subdivided in 1883 when Garden Street was laid out as a public way. The high style Georgian structure was built circa 1747 and retains its original inte- grity of design.

It is a three story, L-plan house capped by a gambrel roof. This slate tiled roof has two tall inside end chimneys on the main section of the house with a third chimney at the eastern end of the ell. Fenestration is 6/6 with pro- jecting cornices, plain sills and black louvered shutters. The distinguished Georgian facade looks west over State Street. The facade is rusticated woodblock. The other elevations are clapboarded. The five bay wide facade is dominated by the elaborate center entrance. The six panel wooden door with elliptical fan and sidelights are framed by engaged Corinthian columns on panelled bases and capped by a projecting cornice. The overhanging roof eaves are ornamented by a modillioned cornice. Five dormers crown the facade in a typically Georgian pattern. The center dormer is headed by a broken pediment; the flanking dormers have triangular pediments.

The north and south elevations of the main block of the house are both two bays deep. The molded cornice has open returns. There is a single window in each gable end and corners are quoined. The ell extends from the southern end of the rear (west) elevation and is four bays deep. The south elevation of the ell has a slightly off center first story bay window with a panelled entablature and flat roof. The two 60 degree side angles each have a single 6/6 window with paired 6/6 on the main side between. The western end of the elevation has a hooded narrow three panel door containing two lights. Iwo triangularly pedimented dormers rise from the roof above. An original roof balustrade was removed as was a double arched porch on the west (rear) elevation. The front door opens to a spacious hall with paneled wainscoting and a straight stairway with turned balusters.

The first story has a modernized kitchen and toilet facilities in the rear. The north parlor and front drawing room exhibit Colonial splendor in the consistent molding of doors, windows and fireplaces. Iwo other large rooms were joined to provide social and meeting areas. Statement of significance

/ARCHITECT Michael Dalton STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE The Dalton House is significant for its elegant architectural style and for the socially and politically prominent persons associated with it. Situated at the head of State Street in the heart of commercial Newburyport, the house has been a part of town, state and national affairs for over 200 years. Michael Dalton was born in February 1709, the great-grandson of Philemon Dalton who arrived in New England in 1635. Michael left his father's home in Hampton, New Hampshire and came to Newbury to engage in seafaring. He quickly became a master mariner. After his marriage to Mary Little in 1735, he became a merchant and built this house c. 1747. Dalton was interested in agricultural pursuits and purchased a 200 acre farm in West Newbury as a country estate. This farm was later occupied by his son, Tristram.

Michael owned" a wharf and a distillery and was involved in the import/export business. In 1764, Michael deeded the house to Tristram, born in May 1738. Tristram graduated from Harvard in 1755. His portrait now hanging in the east drawing room is believed to have been painted at that time. He was married in 1758 to Ruth Hooper, daughter of a successful Marblehead merchant. Tristram then studied law in Salem and entered business with his father. Upon his father's death, Tristram inherited his large estate. He was an influential member of numerous town committees, was a delegate to the Provincial Congress, a representative to the state General Court, a speaker of the Massachusetts House, a member of the State Senate, and a delegate to the ratifying convention of 1788 in Massachusetts. He was a classmate of John Adams'. at Harvard and remained a close friend for life.

In March 1776 Dalton, as a leading merchant and as chairman of the local Committee for Public Safety, received orders from the Massachusetts legislature: "Equip and man with 50 men each the sloop Machias Liberty and the schooner Diligent now lying in Newburyport." The ships were from Maine, but Newburyport at the start of the Revolution, had been chosen as a base for raids on British ships. Dalton accepted the task of outfitting the two warships, but Newburyport was already suffering war- time shortages. No gunpowder was available, and no crews could be found. Dalton and his fellow merchants advanced $5,000 for supplies and bullied the Commissary of the Continental Army into parting with 200 pounds of gunpowder. Crews were found and

The access to the third story is situated at the rear of the second story. This stairway leads to a wide hallway. The third floor retains original wide floorboards and simple paneling.

It consists of four small rooms, a large, oddly shaped room in the ell, and an intersecting room with a fireplace and an outstanding view over- looking the harbor. An interesting stair and platform design serves as access to the skylight. There is an underground bowling alley in the basement installed for the members of the Dalton Club. Item 8: the ships put to sea by the end of March. In early June two captured British prizes were sent into Newburyport loaded with goods from the West Indies. In 1778 a constitution for Massachusetts was rejected by a margin of four to one. In town meeting, Theophilus Parsons, a prominent jurist, submitted a series of resolu- tions, inviting the selectmen to send letters to the other towns of Essex County for a delegated convention later held in the town of Ipswich. The delegates were Parsons, Dalton, Jonathan Jackson, Jonathan Greenleaf and Ralph Cross.

The "Essex Result" established principles of government and the committee played a distinct role in framing the constitution of Massachusetts. When the Revolutionary War was over, maritime interests in Massachusetts expected something more from the federal government than "lights, buoys and day marks" senior senator was first Caleb Strong of Northampton, appointed to conciliate the western counties. However, 'the merchants made the Constitution," said James Sulli- van, "and they should name the candidate" (for junior senator). Tristram Dalton was chosen and he proceeded to New York in Newburyport style, in his own four horse coach, emblazoned with the Dalton arms and attended by servants in the Dalton livery. "Everything that can affect shipbuilding, I shall watch with a jealous eye," he wrote a constituent.

Dalton's final business was as a clerk in the Boston Customs House from 1815 to 1817 when he died at age 79. Tristram and his wife occupied the Dalton House until 1792 when it was sold to Moses Brown, a chaisemaker who later held many influential Newburyport mercantile interests- The land and house were willed to William and Sarah Banister in 1827.

The house was then passed on to various members of the Brown family who finally sold it to Dr. Frank A. Hale in 1880. Iwo other owners resided in the house until the Dalton Club bought it in 1897.
