Description of the property

The Alexander Standish House is located at 341 Standish Street in Duxbury. The building is situated on the southern portion of a small peninsula which juts out into Duxbury Bay. The nomination includes 2½ acres of appropriately landscaped property. The two story gambrel roofed house was built in 1666 by Alexander Standish. It sits on a wide field with a view of the bay. The shingled roof has a large center chimney. The 28'x36' building is also sheathed in shingles with plain architraves and corner boards. Fenestration is 12/12. The asymmetrical five bay wide facade faces southwest with a solid entrance door in the western end portion. The south- east and northwest elevations are two bays deep with two windows on each story. The simple interior remains much as it was originally.

The kitchen in the rear of the structure contains a broad fireplace with Dutch oven, crane, and brick hearth typical of its early period. A small staircase rises sharply from the front hall to the two chambers above. Another small enclosed rear staircase leads from the kitchen to the attic. The walls of the parlors on either side of the front stair- case are covered in clamshell plaster. The cellar has fieldstone walls. Some of the beams appear to be older than the original dwelling and are said to have been salvaged from the home of Myles Standish which burned in 1666.

Statement of significance

/ARCHITECT The Alexander Standish House is significant as the original home of Alexander Standish, the eldest son of Myles Standish. The building is a fine, rare example of a 17th century gambrel roofed dwelling. Alexander lived with his father until their home was destroyed by fire in 1666. The older Standish deeded his son the land for a house site. Alexander was married to Sarah Alden, daughter of John and Priscilla Allen, who arrived here with Standish on the Mayflower. Alexander and Sarah had eight. children. The house was occupied by Standishes until 1762. It had two additional owners until 1777 when it was purchased by John Faunce. The Faunce family sold it to Stephen M. Allen in 1870. It is still owned by Allen descendants.
