Statement of significance

architecture designed by the well known architectural firm of Shepley, Rutan and Coolidge of Boston, Massachusetts, who were sucessors to the prestigious practise Warder in 1890. The library was dedicated on June 12, 1890 in the memory of Jeremiah and Ann A. Warder. Jeremiah Warder came to Springfield, Ohio in 1818 to examine his father's real factory that produced farm machinery. In 1832 Jeremiah helped organize the Springfield Lyceum, a literary club from which formed and a small library was affiliated with the Lyceum in 1847. From 1855-1868 Warder, Jeremiah's son was the largest stockholder. In April of 1872 the City library was finished in 1890. Benjamin Warder had moved from Springfield to Washington, D.C.
