Further Description of Important Features ll locks on the canal are the standard mitered gate type. the lock chamber is 90 feet long, 15 feet wide. The cut stone construction is masked by a cover of concrete, applied as a stop-gap repair measure c. 1905. The south gate stands intact while only the frame of the north gate remains. 43. History and Significance The Ohio & Erie Canal, linking Lake Erie at Cleveland with the Ohio River at Portsmouth, was completed in 1832. For 30 years this waterway was a great controlling factor of increasing commerce, manufactures and population in Ohio. That portion of the canal between Akron and Cleveland opened July 4, 1827. The drop of 395 feet between the two cities was accomplished by 41 locks in 35 miles. 44.

Description of Environment and Outbuildings A section of the canal between Lock No. 36 just north of Rt. 82 and Lock No. 41 is the best preserved portion between Akron and Cleveland. U.S. Steel at one time held leases waters rights from the State and maintains both canal and towpath. Lock No. 39 is directly behind Cahala's Boat house, a popular local tavern. 45.
