Description of the property

The Captain Josiah Locke House was built in 1803 on sparsely-settled farmland, but now stands in a neighborhood of small houses on half-acre lots, with only a small tract of land immediately to the north remaining undeveloped. A stone wall referred to in deeds subsequent to the Probate Court's division of Locke's estate remains on the houselot as does a 1931 garage which replaces Locke's barn. The brick end house itself is a good example of the Federal style. It is 5 bays wide, 2 stories high and has a central entrance. A flat portico supported by 2 columns projects from the entrance. Pilasters frame the door which is topped by a fanlight. Windows are double hung with 6/6 sash. The hipped roof has 4 tall end chimeys. Ells flank the house to the east and west. The one on the west appears to have been original to the house although a 20th century fire has left only the main framing intact.

The east ell, probably added between 1847 and 1850, is a separate structure built against the original house wall. Architectural investigation of the Captain Josiah Locke House shows substantial portions of the building's early fabric surviving intact. On the exterior, all of the clapboards on the front face and most of those on the rear elevation above window-will height show the scarfed joints characteristic of the Federal period. All sash in the rear of the house and one set in an end wall appear original; remaining sash throughout the main house and east ell show a characteristic mid-nineteenth-century profile. Only in the west ell are there later sash, probably installed in 1941 as part of a post-fire recon- struction. The brick end walls of the house are laid in different bonds: Flemish on the east end facing toward town, and common on the west.

Inside, a central hall bisects the main block, with pairs of rooms opening on either side. The interiors show remarkably little change over time. The front half of the central hall is covered with a Federal-period wallpaper; from the house's history of divided. ownership after 1818, it is likely that this paper was applied in the first fifteen years of the building's existence. The hall woodwork appears wholly intact, including an elegant pair of stairs which rise from the front and rear entrances to a common landing before turning and continuing to the second floor. The rooms to the left of the main hallway (west) were modernized with Greek Revival trim and mantels. To the right of the hall (east), the front rooms retain most of their original detail, including a fine plaster cornice in the first-floor room.

The principal missing elements are the shutters which once were hung in the splayed window reveals. In the attic one of two octagonal kingposts supporting the roof bears the initials "JSL" stamped into the wood. While it is possible this is Josiah Locke's monogram, no documentary support has thus far come to light.

Statement of significance

/ARCHITECT STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE The Captain Josiah Locke House is one of a handful of structures which survive in Winchester from before the advent of the railroad in 1833, and one of the few anywhere to contain a complete room of Federal-period wallpaper still in situ. The entire building contains a high proportion of original fabric, modified by sensitively-executed later work, which together give a clear picture both of the house's original form and the effects of 175 years of continuous use and change. for its association with the Locke family, prominent early settlers, and has additional local significance from the building's association with a 20th century family of championship skaters. According to tax records either Captain Josiah Locke (1779-1818) or his father, Josiah (1753-1811) of Woburn, built the house, including the west wing and a now demolished barn, in 1803.

The Locke family were farmers and early settlers in Woburn, which is now the west part of Winchester. Captain Josiah, his father, and his brother Asa, whose slightly later house and outbuildings also survive, all had extensive holdings in the neighborhood. In addition to farming, Josiah Locke was active in town affairs; the Woburn Town Meeting appointed him both a Hog Reeve and a Surveyor of Highways. He was a member and the sixth captain-commander of the Woburn Militia Cavalry, a largely ceremonial body drawing members from Reading and Wilmington as well as Woburn. Locke drowned in 1818, apparently while taking a break from haying to go swimming. He left a wife and eight daughters. The following year the Probate Court divided the house through the center of the hall, giving the east half to Locke's widow as part of her and the west to two daughters.

The west half was subsequently sold to a brother- in-Law in 1835-40; the Greek Revival interior renovations in that side of the house undoubtedly date from just after that sale. When Locke's widow died in 1840, her side of the house was bequeathed to three other daughters, who in turn sold their interests to the husband of a cousin in 1847/48. Al though he does not seem to have made substantial changes to the interior of the house, he appears responsible for the east wing, which was apparently completed in time to be included in the first assessment of the new town of Winchester, formed in 1850 from parts of Woburn,Medford and WestCambridge(now Arlington).

Little seems to have happened to change the house during the rest of the nineteenth The west half passed to one of Captain Locke's grand-daughters, while the east half remained in the same ownership until it was sold in 1904 to Henry Halladay. Halladay sold in 1911 to Thomas Vinson, a Boston banker and lawyer, whose family owned the house until Mrs. Vinson's death in 1969.

A fire in April 1941 badly damaged so damaged the west ell and precipitated the most recent major round of work on the house - the ell was reconstructed, structural stabilization undertaken in the cellar, and other work done. The following year, the house was deeded to the Vinson's daughter, Maribel Vinson Owen. Mrs. Owen was a skater, nine times women's national figure skating champion and a member of three Olympic teams. After retiring, she coached both of her daughters to national championships as well. All were killed in 1961 when the airplane carrying the United States skating team to the Prague world championship meet crashed in Brussels. Following Mrs. Owen's death, the house reverted to Mrs. Vinson, who lived there until her death in 1969, after which the present owners acquired it. Property State ery Lacke, Capt.
