Description of the property

The Upham -Wright Jones House, a Gothic Revival cottage, is constructed of brick on a rectangular window frames. The double pointed arch window in the central gable is flanked clustered flues,typical.of. the.Gothic.Revival period, are located at the east and west corners of the hipped roof. crenelated trim is located on the west elevation. A 11/2 story wing with gable roof, in an older, residential area of Newark,. CONDITION MOVED 2 bays. DATE DETERIORATED in the middle bay. The flanking first floor windows possess pointed arch wood tracery within The house rises 2 stories in height, is L-shaped in plan and the main portion measures 3 by The interior has undergone alteration, however, some of the original mantels, woodwork multiple paned windows have been boarded to prevent vandalism.
A more recent garage is rectangular windows with plain lintels and sills is located to the rear of the house. heavily encrusted with Gothic ornament and finials. Substantial brick chimneys with also on the site. by rectangular casement windows with smooth stone hoodmoulds. A one story porch with Gothic trim and finials extends the length of the facade.The gable bargeboards are also dressed ashlar foundation. The hipped roof with intersecting gable is covered with slate.

Statement of significance

The Upham-Wright-Jones House derives its significance from its architectural integrity. It is undoubtedly one of the earliest, finest and best preserved Gothic Revival residences in the By the 1840's in the East and several years later in Ohio, the Gothic Revival began to replace the Greek Revival as a popular style of architecture. Two men, Alexander Jackson Davis and mid-nineteenth century tastes. Although the Upham-Wright-Jones House was started in 1848 before the 1850 publication of Downing's Architecture of Country Houses, it enbodies all the ideals espoused by Downing. In fact, it bears a striking resemblence to a house designed by A.J.Davis for William Rotch in New Bedford, Massachusetts and illustrated in Downing's book. The house was built by George Upham, a native of Sullivan County, New Hampshire. The house was completed in 1852 and Upham died in 1864.
