Further Description of Important Features This large brick building features massive entablature, long rectangular windows and a large front entranceway. Stained glass windows were added in 1892 and the church's original low dome was replaced by the present steeple about that time. Inside, a pair of stairways lead to the sanctuary on the second floor. It has been considerably altered over the years and features oak woodwork and a tin ceiling. The pulpit area is in the front of the building and a choir loft is at the rear. 3. History and Significance The Fredericktown Methodist Church was organized in 1818. As a result of revivals which increased church membership, this building was constructed in 1856-57. Extensive remodellings occurred in the 1890's.

In 1961 the building was abandoned by the congregation in favor of a new structure and was purchased by the village for use as a town library. The building is a remarkable example of Greek Revival architecture and is one of the town's prominent landmarks. 4. Description of Environment and Outbuildings Located on a corner of the square, this building is highly visible. Large trees surround the building, which is located on a fairly small lot. The nominated property is lot 56 of the Village of Fredericktown. 5. Sources of Information "Fredericktown United Methodist Church", 1976. 46. Prepared by Steven McQuillin 47. Organization M-OSU 48.
