Description of the property

The Shumway Block is located on the south side of Main Street at the west end of webster's central business district. The block is built out to the boundary lines of its lot on all sides, except at the rear (south). The building's east elevation is partially attached to a neighboring two-storey commercial block, the north elevation (facade) faces Main Street, the west elevation faces an adjacent railroad bed and the south elevation faces a small parking lot. The Shumway Block is a three-storey commercial building with an "L" floor plan and The block is constructed of common red brick, except for the facade aicht is built of pressed red brick; decorative trimmings are of brown sandstone. Window lintels and sills throughout are made of rectangular block of rock-faced sandstone; window sash consists of 1/1 at the facade and 9/2 at all other elevations.

The facade (north elevation) is symmetrical, consisting of three wide bays, separated by projecting brick piers. At the first storey, each bay contains a single store front consisting of a dressed granite base above which are modern aluminum trimmed plate glass windows and an entry; the easternmost store front contains a group of three windows, the sill and lintels of which form a continuous band across the facade. Above the windows of the third storey's central bay are three blind arches bearing terracotta date piaques; set between the window lintels of the second storey and the sills of the third storey are panels of terracotta tiles. At the roofline is a brick parapet set on a shallow corbelling. The parapet is divided into three sections by panelled brick posts which rise from the facade's piers.

The outer two posts have flat sandstone caps while the central two posts have pyramida caps with ball finials. stone moulding across the tops of the store fronts and stone blocks with carved rosettes set into the piers at the top of the first storey. - Ali other elevators rise from a plinth of rock-faced granite to a low undecorated parapet with a stone coping. Fenestration of all other elevations is asymmetrical, both by original design and due to the subsequent blocking of windows on the west Except for the replacement of original plate glass store tronts, the painting of some brick and the blocking of some windows (side and rear wails only), the Shumway remains in original condition.

Statement of significance

(in one paragraph) Builder/Architect Unknown The Shumway Block possesses integrity of location, design materials and setting. Characteristic of several brick blocks of transitional Victorian Gothic/Queen Anne design built along Main Street during the late nineteenth century, the Shumway Block has a tri-partite facade, arranged symmetrically about a central pavilion The facade is heavily decorated with bandings of sandstone, terracotta tiles and terracotta date panels. The original three storefront bays, framed by brick piers, remain essentially unchanged although the display windows have been re-glazed with modern plate glass in the mid-twentieth century. Elsewhere the building remains in original condition with the exception of several side wall windows which have been blocked.

Built near the former Webster Railroad Depot, in an area once known as Railroad Square, the Shumway Block is the second structure to occupy its site; the first was the Merchants' Block, a wooden structure which was built after the railroad was extended to Depot Village (downtown Webster) around 1840. Having been occupied by a variety of businesses, the Merchants' Block was sold to Oscar Shumway, a Local businessman, in 1872. On March 3, 1886, the block was destroyed by fire. Because of the site's then valuable commercial location, built immediately after the fire. As with other commercial buildings on Main Street, the Shumway Block originally contained store fronts at the street level and offices in its upper stories, an arrangement which remains. one of the few remaining blocks which reflect the late nineteenth century com- mercial character of Railroad Square.
