Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) St. Mark's Church is a fine and unusual example of Romanesque Revival design.
Built of rock-faced sandstone laid in a broken course, the building consists of two rectangular-plan sections set perpendicularly to each other. The front section has an asynmetrical facade with vir- tually no decoration except for deep voussoirs forming the entry arch and two carved medallions, one on either side of the entry. the facade is irregular, perhaps reflecting interior arrangements and the desire to achieve "picturesque" asymmetry. section is approximately one and one-half stories high and contains the parish house, while the building's rear section contains a chapel capable of seating 350 people. All of the church's elevations are largely un- ornamented, Leaving its fine stonework as the chiel decorative element in its design. St. Mark's Church was formed as a mission in 1887 and oficially recognized as a parish in 1888.
It was the third of four Episcopal mission churches in Worcester founded through the encouragement of the kev- William Huntington, rector of All Saints' Episcopal Church (the city's only Episcopal church until 1883). According to Huntington's design, the four new congregations founded between 1883 and 1903 were named for the first four evangelists. The first service of St. Mark's congregation was held in October, 1887 at the South Baptist Society where the congregation met for one year, during which time the present church building was constructed.
