Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) The Freeland Street Schoolhouse is a two-and-one-half storey brick building of basicall) rectangular plan.
Projecting from positions slightly off-center on the building's south and north elevations are pavilions which rise to pedimented gables and which contain the school's entries and stairways. The building's major (north) elevation is asymmetrical with grouped windows providing light to classrooms at both stories east and west oi the entry pavilion. Ma jor decorative elements of the building's design are its sandstone water table and window trim, courses oI decorative brickwork and panels of terracotta tiles. The building is enclosed by a hip roof with hip-roofed dormers. Built during a period of rapid population growth, the Freeland Street Schoolhouse is one of several grammar schools constructed in the vicinity of Main Street south during the 1880s and 1890s., the area's major period of development.
The building was designed by the local firm of Barker and Nourse and - constructed by Jeremiah Murphy at a cost of $11,444. 10.
