Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) Built in three sections, the Cambridge Street Schoolhouse con- tains Worcester's only Second Empire style school house to have escaped major alteration. Built in 1869 from plans by Elbridge Boyden, the building's front section is a two-storey brick struc- ture with a third storey beneath a slate-covered mansard roof. The facade is symmetrical with slightly projecting center and end pav- ilions, an original entry porch, and decorative brickwork at the cornice.
This arrangement of the facade is similar to that of other larger school buildings designed by Boyden, notably, the Washburn Shops at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (form 102-L), the Ladies' Seminary on Providence Street (early 1850s - now demolished) and the 1867 renovation of Fenwick Hall at Holy Cross College (form 177-A). In 1890, a second free-standing schoolhouse was built at the rear of the lot. This building is a two and one-half storey brick structure with a square floor plan and hip roof. Trimmed with brown sandstone, most features of this structure are derived from Romanesque Revival architecture, but are without specifically Ro- manesque decoration.
In 1916, a three-storey brick and tile Gothic style addition added to the rear wall (south) of the 1869 The Cambridge Street Schoolhouse was built to serve South Worcester, an area which had been sparsely populated until the mid-1850s, when Southbridge Street was extended, providing a direct link with downtown Worcester.
