Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) The Cambridge Street Firehouse is a two-storey brick building with a three-storey tower at its southeast corner and a one-storey wing at its northeast corner- Ine main body oi the bullaing is rectangular in plan with a slate-covered hip roof. The facade (north) rises from a base of rock-faced granite laid in a broken course and contains a rectangular opening framing the two pairs of doors which provide entrance for the engines; above these doors is a tripartite window with arched transons. Centered at the facade's roof line is a decorative gable with sandstone coping and finials. Side walls of the building are largely undecorated, except for the rear tower which rises to paired arched windows, a projecting brick cornice, paired arched openings with vents and a high hip roof.
With the exception of some modern re-painting, the Cambridge Street Firehouse is unaltered. Nearly identical to the Woodland Street Firehouse (Form #141-LL) which was also designed by Fuller and Delano in 1886, the Cambridge Street Firehouse was built to serve South worcester, an area which experienced rapid industrial and residential growth during the 1880s and 1890s, much of which was brought about by the expansion of the Whittall Carpet Mills (Form #177-D-1). 10.
