Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) Built at a cost of approximately $13,000 in 1898-1899, the Millbury Street Schoolhouse #4 is a two and one-half storey structure, built of red brick and rising from a rock-faced granite basement to a slate- covered hip roof. The building's symmetrical facade is dominated by a gablcd central pavilion with two arched entries. Trim of the building consists of a rock-faced sandstone water table, sandstone sills and carved sandstone springer blocks at the entires. At present, the building is unaltered. to which it was identical, the Millbury Street Schoolhouse #4 is the best example of a group of similar schoolhouses built throughout the city.
The Millbury Street Schoolhouse #4 is the last of four school buildings built on its lot between the early 1880s and 1899, a period during which the surrounding neighborhooås became densely developed with three-deckers. Highway construction and subsequent decreases in neighborhood population led to the demolitions of the sites':first three schoolhouses, leaving only the present structure. 10.
