Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) Built to accomodate the residential development of Union Hill in the late 1890s and early 20th century, the Upsala Street School was built in three stages, the first of which contains the school's present facade (north)- This original section is two and one-half stories high of brick construction with a slate-covered hip roof. The facade is symmetrical about a projecting central pavilion which contains a deep entry arch flanked by equal-sized blind arches and roundels bearing the building's construction date--1894. Above the entry is a shallow balconj with a sandstone name plaque. The building's trim consists largely of sandstone which forns window sills, lintels and a continuous decorative band beneath the modillioned cornice. Dormers have hip roofs and the building's chimney stacks are panelled.
In 1902, a rear wing (south) was added to the original structure. identical design to the original building, this addition seems likely to have been included in the building's original design, in order to allow for expansion as the surrounding neighborhood grew. in 1923, a secorld addition was built onto the school. Attached to the rear (south) wall of the 1902 addition, the 1923 addition is built of brick with sandstoae trim. Except for its flat roof, this second addition resembles the design of the earlier sections. 10.
