Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) An early example of the popular side-hall typé of Greek Revival style house, the Chatles Newton House is a twa and one-half storey frame structure set on a foundation of rock-faced granite. Although the building's pedimented facade is characteristically Greek Revival, some elements, such as its narrow corner boards, window trim and narrow cornice are holdovers from Federalist architecture. Particularly fine and rare in Worcester is the house's entry consisting of an original six-panel door set between sidelights and surrounded by an architrave with corner and center blocks.
Derived from patterns pub- lished in Asher Benjamin's builders' companions of the 1830s, this doorway is one of two of its type existent in Worcester ( The other is on the Ezra Rice House - Form 4A) Located north of the city's center, the Newton House is in an area which was not listed in Worcester directories until the 1850s, when the house was occupied by Charles Newton, a farmer. Later, the house was owned by Calvin Foster, a hardware dealer and president of the City National Bank of Worcester. In 1890, Foster rented and later sold the house to James Fuller, a partner in the locally prominent architecture firm of Fuller and Delano. Fuller, 1836-1901, a native of Warwick, Massachusetts, practiced architecture in Worcester from '1867 to 1901; between 1867 and 1876, Fuller was a member of the firm of Earle and Fuller.
In 1879, Fuller entered into partnership witr Nard Delano(Fuller & Delano) with whom he designed many well-knowr buildings, including the Worcester State Armory (corner of Grove & Salisbury Streets), the Chase Building (Front Street), part of the campus of Worcester Academy (Providence Street) and the Old South Church (716 Main Street).
