Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) Designed by Lucius Briggs while he was a member of the firm of Frost, Briggs and Chamberlain, the Greendale Branch Library is a one-storey brick structure set on a high basement and enclosed by a tile roof.
Bearing elements of Spanish Mission style architecture, the building's symmetrical facade is dominated by a projecting central pavilion. Centered on the pavilion is a carved stone doorway faamed by Corinthian pilasters surmounted by consoles and a semi-circular pediment. Elsewhere the building is decorated by geometric brickwork and limestone trimmings. A plaque on the exterior records the donors of the site as "the Manufacturers of Greendale," including the Allen-Higgins Wall Paper Company, Norton Company, Osgood Bradley Car Company, Norton Grinding Company, the Heald Machine Company, O.S. Walker Company, Morgan Spring Company, Young Brothers, and Worcester Pressed Steel Company.
In 1859 the city of Worcester opened its first public library; the bulk of books in the original collection came from those sources, the former Worcester Lyceum, the Young Men's Library Association, and a gift of 7,000 volumes from Dr. John Green. Although a main libaary was established on Elm Street, no branch libraries existed in outlying areas of the city prior to 1914. In 1895 a delivery point was established in Greendale at a store where books were delivered once a week. By 1898 this system had proven itself successful and seven new delivery points were established. In 1908 a movement was begun to establish branch libearies. Around 1912 the city was given $75,000 by Andrew Carnegie to allow the construction of three branch libraries of which the Green- dale Branch was one.
(The other two were built at 812 Millbury Street and 705 Southbridge Street.) Cornerstones f6r the three buildings were laid on March 17, 1913. 10.
