According to Brooks' obituary, the present house was built in 1856 and remained his home until 1881. Brooks was a deacon of the Central Church from 1863 to 1879; a member of the Massachusetts State Legislature in 1854, 1805 and 1886; and a member of the Worcester Common Council in 1850-1851. In addition to farming, Brooks worked as a black- smith and was involved in real estate development in the Chadwick Square and Greendale sections of the city. The property remains in the possession of Brooks' descendants and is, perhaps, the only farm left in Worcester. to give the appearance of a cottage.
The facade (south) is three The John Brooks House is a one and ono-hall storey fzame house bouglt wide at the first storey, rising to a steep gable with oculus at the attic. At the first storey, the o» facade has a side-hall entry, two over-sized windows and a full porch with open supports and original brackets. Un- usual for buildings of this type, the Brooks House has three bracketed gables on the east (side) elevation. On the house's west wall is a rectangular-plan ell set at right angles to the main body of the hoise. Alterations to the house are minor, consisting of a one-storey frane addition at the north end of the house's east elevation. In its present coddition, the Boooks House is a particularly fine example of locally popular cottage-type of the 1850s and 1860s. 10.
