Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) The William Morarland House, one of Worcester's finest eighteenth- century "Cape Cod" type houses, maj have been constructed between 1743 and 1759 for Willian Mcrarland (1722-1505) on land given to him by his father, Andrew. As several McFarland houses existed in the area, it is difficult to be certain that this house and not one of the others was the home of William McFarland, Sr., Who later became & lieutenant in the Revolution. The house was certainly owned by William MeFarland, Jr. (1758-1839) who served as a soldier in Captain David Chadwick's companj in 1777. In the early nineteenth century McFarland, ir. married Anra. Davis; some time in the 1830s the Mcrarlands deeded the house to their daughter, Sarah Gale, Wife of Cyrus Gale, retaining life estate for them- selves. was sold in 1858 to George I.
Foster, After the death of Anna Merarland and of Saran Gale'it through the property a farmer, who occupied the remainder of the century.. Part of the uncertainty in determining the origins of the house comes from varying references as to whether the home of William McFarland, Sr. was on the east side of Salisbury Street or not. Whether or not 525 Salisbury Street was constructed at the earlier or later range of dates given, it is a rare survivor from Wor- cester's earlier, rural development. Characteristic of vernacular architecture in the vicinity of worcester, the Mofarland House is a rectangular plan building with a central chimney and rear ell. The house is set on a rubble-stone foundation and is enclosed by a pitched roof.
The wide spacing of the facade's three openings (two windows and central entry) has strong associations with buildings dating from the earl; eighteenth century settlement of Worcester Count;- 10.
