Of apparent Federalist origins, the Chadwick-Brittan House is among Worcester's few well-preserved houses of that period. The house is two and one-half stories high and has a symmetrical center-entrance facade (west). Added to the facade have been a Greek Revival style doorway (ca. 1845) and Colonial Revival style dormers and porch (ca.1900. Extending along Shaffner Street, the house has a long two-storey ell, portions of which retain original 6/9 sash. The house's earl; history is unclear; a 1931 histor: names 309 Lincoln Street as the former Chadwick Tavern, built for Lydia Chadwick in 1797. Additional sources repeat the same information and an 1877 "Map of Earliest Settlers" (prepared by Caleb Wall) notes this location as being the Chad- wick Hotel, opened around 1800. By 1833 (the year of the first detailed map of Worcester) the building had ceased to be an inn and was owned by A.D.
Foster. During the mid-nineteenth century the house was occupied by Josiah Brittan, who owned extensive property on - both sides of Lincoln Street around Adams Square (immediately south of 309 Lincoln Street). Brittan also operated a brickyard in this vicinity- After Brittan's death the property was sold by his widow to George H- Lane, a blacksmitn, and taéter to josiah Shattuck, owner of the Worcester Truck Company. During the late 1680s and 1890s, much of Brittan's former property was subdivided and developed with Queen Anne style cottages and houses. At the time of this subdivision the Chadwick-Brittan House may have been moved slightly north on its original lot to make way for Shaifner Street. 10.
