Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) Built as part of the Mcrarland-Chamberlain Farm which was subdivided to create Richmond Heights around 1096, the Cabriel House is an unusually fine example of Colonial Revival architecture.
The house's rectangular plan, hip roof, Ionic pilasters and dormers are characteristic elements of Colonial Revival design. Other, less usual features include a second storey bowed oriel with Palladian window (2nd storey facade), splayed window lintels with keystones, and Ionic porches with original balustrades. Currentl: in excellent condition, the Gabriel House stands out as one of the earliest and finest houses in the Richmond Heights area. The house's first occupant was George Gabriel, a bookkeeper and later manager of the George Blake Company, dealers in iron, steel and other metals.
Gabriel's move here in 1099, from a house at 8 Melville Street which he had built in 1891, is characteristic of the change in resi- dential patterns which occurred in the nineteenth and early twentieth While earlier, Victorian middle and upper-class areas had existed on all sides of the center city,by the 1800s districts north, ast and south of the business district were being by-passed in favor f the city's west side, particularly such areas as the former Lincolr Estate (Form 116-L), Harmond Heights (Form 101-3) and later Richmond Heights. 10.
