Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) Built in 1885, the Daniels House is an excellent example of Queen Anne style architecture.
Asymmetrical in plan and massing, the house rises from a brick first storey which is trimmed with rock-faced sani- stone and terracotta tiles. The house's second floor and attic are of frame construction covered with clapboards and decorative shingling. Characteristic of much Queen Anne design, the house has first and second storey porches on its south wall and an entry porch bearing a sunburst decoration in its gable on the house's facade (east). An additional sunburst decorates the facade!s first-storey, arched window. At present the Daniels House is in original condition. The house was first occupied by irederick Daniels in 1885. Daniels (1853-1913), the son of a contractor, was brought to Worcester at : the age of one year. In 1873 he graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Insti- tute and immediately entered the employ of Washburn and Moen Company.
Around 1875-1876 Daniels was sent to Philadelphia to study steel-making, in an effort to improve the quality of steel produced at the Washburn and Moen factory- In 1077 Daniels traveled throughout Europe, studying he production of steel; shortly after his return, he was sent again tr Germany lor further study. Having occupied various positions at washburr and Moen, Daniels was made general suoerintendent of the companv in 1888. Durine his career Daniels took out 157 patents for the improvement of furnaces and rolling mills for steel, and was awarded a gold medal at the Paris Exposition of 1900; in 1910 he received the title of Knight (cont.) 10.
