Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) Together with the John Hammond House (264 Highland Street - see Form 101-3:- Hammond Heights) which it resembles, the charles liles House is one of Worcester's best examples of Italianate residential architecture- The house is made up of a two-storey front section with a hip roof and rock-faced granite foundation and a rear ell, centered in the east wall of the front section. Among the house's fine details are corner quoins, a modillioned cornice, "widow's walk" framed by a balustrade, bay windows and window caps set on consoles. An especially fine detail is the house's original porch (facade) framed by arched openings. Around 1846 a house on the opposite corner of Forestdale Road was ourchasedbby Willard Miles.
Between 1047 and 1049 Charles Miles, a lerk in the Worcester County Treasurer's Office, was listed in loca] directories as a boarder at Willard Miles's house. The change in Charles Miles's listing to a separate house on Lincoln Street (1850) and the appearance of a house on this site on the 1851 map of Worcester suggest the building's construction date. 10.
