Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) The Daniel Stevens House is a two-storey brick structure with a third storey beneath a slate-covered mansard roof.
The house has a entry and open porch (posts replaced 20th century) flanked by three-sided bay windows. Decorative trim consists of quoins, sandstone window lintels with incised decoration, decorative brickwork beneath the cornice, brackets and dormers with brackets. Along the property's frontage is a retaining wall and gate posts, all of dressed granite. Daniel Stevens (1818-1888) was a native of Charlton, Massachusetts who traveled to California with his brother, Charles P- in 1850 in search ol gola. By 1053 the two nad returned to worcester where they formed a partnership as D. and C.P. Stevens, painters. In 1854, the Stevens brothers expanded their business to sash, doors and blinds.
Having occupied a building on the site of the present federal Building (Main and Southbridge Streets), the Stevens' moved their business in 1067 to #32 Southbridge Street, & building which they owned and expanded into a major commercial block (see stevens Building - form 130-CBD-68) The Stevens brothers later became involved in a variety of ventures including a large grain and flour business and real'estate development along Southbridge Street. Beginning in 1853 Daniel and Charles Stevens shared a house at #7 Svcamore street. It is likely that the present house was built around 1865-1870 and that the previous building was either moved to a new 10. In 1880 Charles Stevens moved to Woodland Street, after which fi7 Sycamore Street was occupied by Daniel Stevens.
