Building is an opulent classicism, a papular style of the sarly twentleth century.. example of Beauz Arts The building's facade (east) is faced with brick laid up in a Flemish bond and trimmed with dressed limestone. Inree bays wide, the lacade 1s symmetrical, rising Irom a low basement to a rusticated first storey. Centered on the first storey is an elaborate limestone entry with a pediment (decorated by a shield) set on consoles with garlands. On either side of the entry at the second storey are stone balconies with original iron railings. The facade's second and third stories are framed by three arches, above which the fourth storey contains three tri-partite windows, each with a stone balcony and iron railing. the roof is a pressed metal cornice from which modillions and cresting of acroteria have been removed.
The building was constructed by a Lourth storlron railin cresting local builder, .v- cross, at a cost oi $110,000- Although used Ior storage, the I.O.O.F. Building retains nearly all oi its original features. First organized in Worcester in 1844 as the Quinsigamond Lodge No. 43, the International Order of Odd Fellows was one of several fraternal organizations in Worcester which grew to have enormous memberships in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The lounders of the Quinsigamond Lodge were Joseph Coburn of Boston (a mason who was temporarily living in Worcester while building the 1844 section of Worcester County Courthouse) and four of Coburn's employees, also (cont.) 10. By 1917 the member-. ship had risen to 3,015, broken up into six lodges, most of which met at the Main Street building. In addition the organization sponsored the formation of four Rebekah Lodges (for women) and "two encampments" with a membership of approximately 1,900 in 1918.
