Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) Designed by P.W. Ford of Boston, who designed a large number of Worcester's Roman Catholic churches, St.
Peter's Catholic Church is predominantly Victorian Gothic style and is one of Worcester's most ornate Victorian church buildings. The building is built of red brick with granite trim. The church plan consists of a high nave with en- closed side aisles, transept and square-plan tower at the nave's south- west corner- The church's facade contains three entries set in arches with alternating brick and stone voussoirs; above are oculi with quatri- foliate tracery (side aisles) and three arches containing paired windows and decorative brick panels. Above these arched windows is a rose window. The tower rises in stages with buttresses at the corners of its first two stories. At the tower's third storey is a belfry framed by paired arches on each wall. Above the belfry is& corbelled cornice, crenellated parapet and pinnacles. In May of 1884, St.
Peter's Catholic Church was formed to provide a separate church for the growing Catholic population of Worcester's south- western sections, particularly in the vicinity of Main Street south. Reverend Daniel H. 0"Neill was appointed to form the parish and, on June , 1004,. grouna was broken for the present bullding- On September T, ,A8L, the church's cornerstone was laid and the congregation began using the basement chapel late in 1884, although the church was not fully completed until 1893, when it was dedicated. 10.
