Description: The Woodland Street District contains 19 buildings located on both sides of Woddland Street (east and west) between Oberlin and Charlotte Streets (see maps 152 and 153 submitted with Worcester Multiple Resource National Register Nomination). Properties includedwithin the district are shown in Worcester Assessors' Book 6, pages 37 (Lots 10, 42 (lots asection of Woodland Street that retains a group of Victorian houses that are largely unaltered and reflect the various periods during which the street was developed.

Co.) ca.1076 Victorian Gothic--2½ storey; "L" plan, original porch, gable aprons with trefoils Significance: The Woodland Street District contains a mixture of well-preserved Victorian houses and preserves a pattern of development which characterized many of the Victorian residential neighborhoods around Main Street South.
The first development of this section of Woodland Street begain in the late 1860s. Between 1868 and 1881 seven houses were built on the west side of the street, most of them constructed on double houselots. Although some development of the street's east side took place, few buildings on this side of the street pre-date 1890. Among the most architecturally interesting houses from this first period of development the John Hill House, 140 Woodland. HInteresting First occupied in 1876 by John Hill, owner of the National Manufacturing Company, this bouse has an unusual "I" floor plan with the main entry of the house located at the junction of the two wings and set at a 45 degree angle to both wings. Virtually unaltered, the Hill House retains gable aprons, decorated window a fine, original front porch. In addition to the John Hill House, the Henry Farrar House, 110 Woodland Stree (ca.
1877) and the Wade Hill House, 114 Woodland Street (1881) are good examples of local Victorian Gothic architecture, particularly the former which remains nearly unaltered. Also built in the street's first wave of development were number of Second Empire style houses, of which the Henry Taft House, 118 Woodland Street (ca. 1868) is the best example, although slightly altered. By the 1890s, Woodland Street, which had been on the city's outer fringe in the 1860s and 1870s, was completely surrounded by residential neighborhoods.
The pressure of increasing population and apparent rising land values led to the area's more dense re- Estatopment. Between Loudon and Hawthorne Streets the "Slater demolished and the land subdivided into smaller house- lots. On thewest side of Woodland Street all of the original double lots were subdivided and new houses constructed on what had een the side yaras ol the eariier nouses. Notable buildings from this period of development (ca. 1890-1905) include All Souls' Universalist Church, ca. 1891, a Queen Anee style wood frame church building; 130 Woodland Street, 138 Woodiand Treet, an ornete bulideng of mised ioLonsal Revival and QueenAnne style architecture. The Frank Heath House (ca.
1904) at the south corner of Woodland and Loudon Streets is an especially fine example of Colonial Revival style architecture, with a nearly square floor plan with a high hip roof, a porch across its facade and another on its west wall. The house is richly decorated with Colonial Revival style details including Palladian windows framed by Ionic columns andset out from the main body of the building. Many of the details of the Heath House are reminiscent of the William Inman House of 1897-1898 at 7 Oak Street (see indivdual form ) which was designed by George Clemence.
