Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) The Henry Goddard House is a two-aäd-one-half storey wood frame structure which rises from a foundation of dressed granite to a mansard roof covered with hexagonal-pattern slates. The building has an asymme- trical plan with a variety of rectangular and three-sided bays on its three ma jor elevations (noth, east and west). At the structurels rear (south) is a one-and-one-half storey kitchen ell. Decorative elements of the building's facade (north) include an original entry porch with balustrade, Low edament and patred bracretsatcta cornice. a rectangular two-storey bay with a Most dormers of the house's main block have arched hoods, bracketed cornices and center finials. Although currently neglected, the house is in original con- dition with the exception of one bay of a rear porch which has been removed.
Among the most elaborate examples of its style in worcester, the Goddard House is also one of the very few buildings of its period to have had its architect identified. The house was built for Henry Goddard who was a manager of the Washburn and Moen Wire Works. Baotnon 1904), a Worcester native, was the son of Benjamin Goddard, an early partner of Ichabod Washburn, with whom Benjamin Goddard developed a Bén Jan jamin coaa agoddara Goddard (1823- orocess for drawing wire which became the basis of Worcester's extensive wire industry. As early as 1843 or 1844, Henry Goddard began learning the trade of wire drawer at the Washburn and Moen mills. Later Goddard succeeded his father as manager of Washburn and Moen's South Worcester workg, a position which Henry Goddard occupied until 1869 when the (cont.) 10.
