Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) The Jesse Moore House, under construction in 1890 and occupied in 1891, is a superb local example of Queen Anne style architecture, one which also contains elements of Shingle Style design. The house is of asymmetrical plan rising from a basement and first storey of rock-faced granite, laid in a broken course, to a second storey of frame constrcution, covered with shingles. The building's com- plex roof is slate-covered. The house's facade (south) has a large, three-storey octagonal tower at its southwest corner and a small octagonal tower at its south- east corner. Extending along the facade is an open porch, above which is a re- cessed porch, at the second storey, between the towers.
Both the house's east and west elevations carry the same decorative elements as the facade, including terra cotta tiles, varied (decorative) sash, dormers and porches. The Moore House is unaltered except for the addition of a fire escape on its west elevation. Although the architect of the house is currently unknown, two possible attri- butions for its design exist. First, Moore's son Frank is listed as an architect living in this house in 1892; it is unknown if Moore worked in the office of a local architect or if he had a practice of his own. Second, the "residence of Mr. George Heywood", shown in an 1898 catalogue of buildings designed by Barker & Nourse, resembles the Moore House in many details, suggesting that the two houses share the same architect.
Jesse Moore, about whom nothing is known, tirst moved to #25 Catherine street around 186l when the Draper Ruggles Housesee Form103-G) stood on this lot. Around 1889 Moore had the Ruggles House moved westward on the lot to its present site and construction was begun on Moore's new house. The Moore House remained in the Moore family until 1925 when it was purchased by the Louis Pasteur Hospital 10.
