and constructed by Captain Edwin Lamb of Worcester, the Henry Goulding Mansion was one of the most opulent Italianate style houses built in Worcester during the mid-nineenth century- The Goulding Mansion is two stories high, built of frame construction, with & low hip roof. The house's symmetrical facade contains a fine original . entry porch with arched openings, modillioned cornice and parapet. First storey windows are set in moulded architraves with consoles supporting pedimented caps; second storey windows are set in nearly identical surrounds, without pediments. Extended around the building is a panelled and bracketed cornice. Prior to the house's conversion to a home for the aged, its exterior was covered with wood (probably clapboards) and had corner quoins. Originally the house had a cupola which was removed after 1927.
Attached to the house's south wall is a two-storey brick addition with a facade (west) of equal-sized bays. Of eclectic style, this addition is covered with stucco and has arched windows, decorative brickwork, cornice brackets and a slate-covered hip roof. At the south end of the 1926 addition is a new wing of modern design, completed In 1978. The Goulding Mansion was built for Henry Goulding on the site of Goulding's earlier Greek Revival style house, which was moved #4 Dix Street (see Form 116-E) Henry Goulding was an early Iocal manufacturer of woolen machinery. The younger Goulding operated a tailoring business in Boston and iater a drug store in Worcester; after 1866, Goulding retired from business to manage the family's extensive real estate. In 1921 the Goulding heirs sold 26 Harvard Street to the Swedish Iutheran Church which converted the house to a home for the aged and, in 1925, added a brick and stucco wing.
