Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) The Tilley Raymond House is an excellent example of the once popular side-hall type of Greek Revival style house. The building is two-and-one-halt storles high, built on a foundation of rock-faced granite.
The facade is three bays wide with corner pilasters and a pedimented gable. Across the first storey of the facade is a Doric porch, behind which the landing is covered with matched boarding. The entry contains paired replacement doors (ca.1875); sash throughout is original 6/6 except for the facade first storey where original over-sized windows contain 6/9 sash. A native of Royalston, Massachusetts, Tilley Raymond (b- 1012) came to Worcester in 183l and worked locally as a carpenter. By the 1840s Raymond had entered into partnership with Horatio Tower (see Forn 130-D) as Tower & Raymond, Worcester's most active builders of the 1840s and 1850s. Among the most well-known buildings constructed by the firm are the Old Central Church (demolished) and Mechanics' Hall. In addition to working in worcester, perhaps to take advantage of the building boom which followed the gold rush.
Alter Raymond's death #12 George street was occupied by his son Edward, who had served in the Civil War and later became Chief of Police in Worcester and Clerk of Worcester's Central District Court. The younger Raymond studied law with Senator George Hoar of Worcester and was admitted to the bar in 1880. In 1898 the house was sold to Henry E. Whitcomb who converted it to apartments. 10.
