Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) Built in 1834, the Lincoln House is Worcester's earliest example of the side-hall Greek Revival style type of house, a type which dominated local building in the 1840's and 1850's. Exhibiting elements of late Federalist architecture, the Lincoln House rests on & foundation of hammered granite and has narrow eorner boards and moulded window trim.. Characteristic of the Greek Revival style, the house's facade gable is made to appear as a pediment by the extension of a cornice across its length; further Greek Revival elements include the pedimenbed entry porch with Doric columns and the front doorway with sidelights, a top light, and an original four-panel door. Levi Lincoln, Jr. (1782-1868) was born in Worcester, the son of evi Lincoln, a prominent lawyer. Levi, Jr.
graduatec - from Harvard n 1002 and began the study of law under his father, then the Attorney General of the United States. In 1805 he was admitted to the bar, opened an officein Worcester and by 1812 had been elected to the State Senate. In 1814 he was elected to the Massachusetts House , of Representatives, sepving in it for seven of the nett ten jéars. Lincoln was elected Governor oi Massachusetts in 1025, serving nine consecutive years in that office. After stepping down governorship (1834), Lincoln was appointed to fill out a vacancy in the U.S. House of Representatives, a position to which he was elected in 1835- Having been active in politics, Lincoln apparently decided to retire to Worcester in 1834 at which time he commissioned Elias cont'a . 10.
