Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) Built in 1926, the Katz and Leavitt Apartment House is archi- -tectually unigue in Worcester. The building is five-stories high and is faced with buff brick on all elevations, except for the central section of its facade (south) which is faced with ornate, glazed tile. Making extensive use of Venetian Gothic precedent, this tile section rises from a pointed arch entry (first storey).
Above windows of the third, fourth and fifth stories are panels nfrsenirda containing a variety of Gothic motifs (quatrefoils, pointed arches, crockets and finials) executed in various colors of glazed tiles. At the roof line are pointed-arch balustrades set between sections of brick parapet. Unaltered, #53 Elm Street aiso has its original cast-stone stoop s and eta and retaining wall. Local tradition states that the building's tiles were imported from Europe, although there is no evidence to support or disprove this assertion. Lucius Briggs, the architect of 53 Elm Street, was Worcester's leading architect of ca 1900-1930. Among Brigg's most prominent public buildings are the Worcester Consolidated Street Railway Carbarn and the Worcester War Memorial Auditor- ium at Lincoln Square.
#52 Elm Street is the most flamboyant of Brigg's designs and illustrates the strong taste for revivalist styles which existed during the 1920s. 10.
