1860-1870), the William Hogg House was built in 1897, reportedly incorporating just enough of the earlier house to qualify as a renovation, , thus avoiding the - zoning requirenent of brick construction for all new houses in the area. The Hogg House was illustrated in Worcester of 1898, in which it was noted that "during the past year William James Hogg (Worcester Carpet Company) has completed and now occupies the residence at the corner oi Elm and Ashland streets, one oi the most beautilu. houses in that neighborhood." . At present the Hogg House is virtually unaltered from its 1897 design by Fuller and Delano of Worcester. the facade of the house (north) is symmetrical with a center entry set behind a Corinthian porch and flanked by bay windows.
The east elevation contains a porte cochere supported by Corinthian columns, bay windows, arched windows set in rectangular surrounds (1st storey), and windows with architrave ana moulded caps (2nd storey). The house cests on a granite foundation and rises to a slate-covered hir roof with pedimented dormers. Except for the removal of a balustrade at the roof and from the porte cochere, the Hogg House retains all of its Colonial Revival style decorative details. William James Hogg (1851-1929) was born in Philadelphia and came to Worcester in 1879, when he and his father boutht the Compton Carpet Company at South Worcester (see Area Form for Whittall Mills, Districi Form 177-D). In 1884 William J. Hogg and his father acquired the Packachoag Worsted Mills, followed in 1887 by the purchase of the Stoneville Mills in Auburn, Massachusetts. Between 1901 and 1905 Hogg sold his interest in the Worcester Carpet Company (his family's business) to Matthew J. Whittall.
After 1905 Hogg was active in a number of philanthropic and social organizations, serving also as a Worcester Board of Irade, anc southwestern section of the city.
