Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) Built in 1918 to replace a police station of the 1880s, the Waldo Street Police Station was designed to serve as police headquarters and as a courthouse for the Central District Court. Rechetly vacated, the Station is in unaltered condition, retaining all elements of its unusuat Renaissance Revival design. Ihe building is three stories high, rising Irom a high basement to a flat roof. North and west elevations and part.
of the south elevation are faced with pressed brick and trimned with extremely ornate terracottá: The Station's two entries (west) are nearly identical, each consisting of a rectangular brick frame within which are set two roundels and an arched doorway; the entry arches are trimmed with terracotta bearing an interlocking follate relief into which are cast the words "Police (north entry) and "Courts" (south entry). Nindows of the basement, first and second stories are set by pairs ir rectangular brick surrounds. Third storey windows consist of paired arched windows set in large blind arches, each arch bearing a marble Above the third storey is & deep terracotta cornice made up of dentils, modillions, bead and reel mouldings and a band of foliate decoration. Designed by George Clemence, a local architect, the warac Street Police station is a major public building of unusually high .
