Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) Designed in the first year of George Clemence's architectural practice, the Elizabeth Street School contains an eclectic combination of Renaissance Revival and Romanesque Revival stylistic elements. The building is two stories high, rising from a basement of mottled yellow brick with upper stories of red brick. The building's major decorative features are its square-plan entry towers which flank the southern portion of the structure. Each tower contains an arched entry and roundels at the first storey, tripartite arched windows at the second storey, and, above, & high pyra- midal roof. Other decorative elements include arched windows (southern half of building), brick diapering beneath eaves and eyebrow dormers.
Unlike most other - school buildings oi its period, the Elizabeth street Schoolhouse has had no major additions, perhaps because the surrounding neighborhood (Chandler Hill) was fully developed at the time of the schoolis construction. 10.
