Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) First occupied in 1049, the Sturtevant House is a unique local example of Greek Revival architecture.
The house is a two-storey frame structure with a "T" shaped floor plan, each wing of which is trimmed with corner pilasters and a pedimented gable. The house's side-hall facade has an original entry and windows set in earred frames with splayed sides. Ex- tending along the facade and side walls of the house is an open Doric porch set in a granite base. Pedimented gables contain (at the facade) an arched window with label moulding and (side wings) octagonal lights. Set over the crossing of the building's floor plan is a square cupola. Although covered by asbestos siding, the Sturtevant House remains intact.
Leonard Sturtevant, a tailor who owned the house during the last hali o1 the nineteenth century, 1s characteristic of the middle-class business- men and small-scale manufacturers who settled in the vicinity of Belmont Hill during the 1840s and 1850s, as Worcester's manufacturing district began to engulf former residential districts east of Main Street. Lured by the picturesque potential of hillside sites, the first oocupants of Belmont Hill built cottages and moderate-sized houses in the then popular Gothic and Greek Revival styles. The area's popularity was relatively short-lived, and by the 1870s and 1880s it was being more densely built up with working-class housing. One possible reason for the area's abandonment by the middle-class residents may have been its position inmediately east of a major industrial district, the fumes from which (cont.) 10.

In addition, the area was immediately northeast of a large district of very poor immigrants (Pine Meadow) which was seen as a major social oroblem as early as the lo50s. For the most part, subsequent develop- ment has obscured much of the early history of Belmont Hill, Ieaving the Sturtevant House and several other buildings as important reminders of the area's past.
