Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) Built in 1894 from plans by William Forbush of Boston (also of Worcester) the Abbott Street School bears & strong resemblance in plan and detail to the Downing Street School of 1891 also designed by Forbush (Form 140-D). The Abbott Street School consists of a rectangular-plan main structure from which projects a central pavilion (east wall). pavilion is a two-storey, semi-circular bay which is flanked by entry arches (lst storey) and elements of this central pavilion (arches, rock-faced granite trim and conical slate roof) are derived from Romanesque Revival architecture, while trim of the building's main body is more utilitarian in character. This building was constructed by B.C. Jaques, & local builder, at & cost of $20,000.
In 1905-1906 a two-storey brick addition was buiit at the rear (west) of the original building. Of similar design to the main body of the schoolhouse, this addition was designed by J. William Patston of Worcester. 10.
