Designed by the prominent Worcester firm of Fuller and Delano, the Shattuck House displays unusual familiarity with English Queen Anne 2oa0 ansoened inter ootatione design, unlike other local houses of this period which tend to be less informed interpretations of the style executed in shingle- covered frame construction. The Shattuck House's two-and-one-half storey asymmetrical facade contains especially fine details in its moulded brick,sandstone quoining, broken scroll pediment (2a storey), pilastered window surround (gable), decorative terracotta panel with a shiald inscribed "g" (gable), and dormer with its high gable. Decora- tion continues around to the building's side walls with pilastered chimneys, dormers with high gables and decorative paneling on exterior chimneys (south wall).
At the facade the house has a one-storey wooden porch supported by paired columns; access to the porch is gained through an entry bay surmounted by a low pediment with plaster foliate decora- tion. Except for the demolition of an originalocarriage house at its southwest corner, the Shattuck House is unaltered. The Shattuck House was built at a cost of $12,000 in 1885 for Moody shattuck (1835-1892), a cigar manufacturer. A native of Vermont, Shattuck came to Worcester in 1858 and bought a small cigar business soon after his arrival. In 1860 Shattuck moved his business to the Walker Building, from which it was moved to Clark's Block in 1880. In 1886 Shattuck took John H. Dally and J.A. Clemence as partners in the firm, which was incorporated as M.E. Shattuck Cigar and Tobacco Company (cont.) 10.

Although no longer used as a residence, the Shattuck House retains the appearance of a single-family house and is among the best ezamples of the free-standing Victorian houses which were built along Main Street South by Worcester industrialists during the last half of the nineteenth century.
