Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) The former Hammond Organ Reed Factory is a Second Empire style brick building of two-story height with a high basement and a third story beneath its slate-covereá mansard roof. The building's plan is irregular, reflecting the various additions made to its north and west walls during the 1870s and 1880s. The factory's facade is on May Street and has an off-center entrance which is approached fron a high granite stoop- Extending along May Street is an original cast-iron fence, set in a granite base. One of the few remaining Second Empire style factory buildings in the Hammond F'actory was built for Andrew Hammond (1830-1906), a native of New Hampshire who worked as an "iron Moulder" in Manchester and Laconia, New Hampshire befóre conning Io Worcester in 1851.
Having worked at the malleable iron works of vaite, Chadsey & Co., as well as at several local foundries, Hammond found the work "distasteful" and turned to the study of music. Hammond traveled briefly as a music iteacher in the American West before entering the organ reed manufacturing Tirm oi Edward Harrington and Augustus Rice, of which Hammond became sole owner in the 1860s. In 1868 Harmond built the easterrmost Porteachod the pae Sttest cact 1886,o tich adite nsreete na de until workers were amplojed here. Having survived the declining demand which drove other local organ manufacturers out of business in the 1890s, the Hammond Reed Company (incorporated in 1892) remained successful due to Hammond 9 contiruous alterations of instrument design and improvement of manufacturing machinery.
Between the 1890s and World War I, tne Hammond Organ Reed Factory was believed to be the largest organ reed factory 10.
