Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) Resembling the plan of the nearby Norcross Brothers' Houses (Forms lij - 141-5-3 and 141-B-4), the Edward Stark House is an early example of Queen Anne style architecture.
The house is two-and-one-hali stories high, rising from a foundation of rock-faced sandstone; upper stories are built of pressed brick with dressed sandstone trim. Major features of the a gabled dormer and turret, a porch with turned posts, double front doors, gable with decorative brickwork and chamfered sandstone window Lintels. In addition the property retains its original granite stoops and retaining wall along Oread Street. At present the Stark House is unaltered and, together with its neighbor (the Charles Fitch House - Form141-N), serves as a rare reminder of the appearance of the Oread Street neighborhood when it was the home of many of the city's manufac- turers during the late nineteenth century. Edward Stark (1829-1900) was a native of Halifax, Vermont who came to Worcester in 1850. In 1865 Såward Stark and his brothero.2trug a partnership as E.H.
Stark ü Co., boot and shoe manufacturers. Stark is not listed at 21 Oread Street in local directories until 1884, a building notice for the house was published in 1880. This notice gave the house's estimated cost as $15,000 and named J.B. Woodworth as both architect and builder. Little is known of Woodworth, except that he practiced architecture in Worcester from 1877 until his death in 1893. The largest number of Woodworth's known designs are simple cottages and three-storey apartment blocks, none of which equal the high quality of the Stark House. 10.
