Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) Built prior to 1860, the Scofield House is an early example of Second Empire style architecture.
As with other early houses of its style, the Scofield House has a square floor plan with rear ell. The building's Iacade is symmetrical, possessing corner quoins, an original entry porch, side-lighted entry, moulded window caps with dentils and a deep dentilled cornice. Above the cornice is a low, concavely curwed mansard roof with two dormers at the facade. At present the house is unaltered. James Scofield (1824-1871) was a native of Conmecticut; from 1845 to 1849 he owned a New London newspaper which he sold upon moving to Stockton, California in 1049. Serving as collector of the port oi Stockton, Scofield also sold miners' supplies and attempted to establish a newspaper there, although his printing presses were losa in shipping.
Around 1855-1857 Scofield returned to the East coast and in 1865 moved to Worcester to work as an agent for the Charter Oak Life Insurance Company of Hartford, Connecticut. During his six years in Worcester before his death, Scofield developed an extensive insurance business, employing agents throughout the state. At the same time Scofield pur- chased large tracts of open land along Main Street South and tried to promote zoning which would have required that all new houses along Main Street be set 1501 back from the street. Intending that Main Street South become a "grand avenue" Scofield succeeded in persuading some individual ovners to follow this proposed restriction; however, his (cont.) 10.
