Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) The Brightside is a four-storey brick apartment house with a synme- trical facade (south). Planked on either side by seni-circular bays, the central section of the facade contains an columns with spiralled fluting and ornate capitals at the first storey.
Above the entry is a balcony with an original iron railing (2d storey) and terracotta panels (2d and 3d stories), one of which bears the name "Brightside" - Above the fourth storeg is a rock-faced sandstone cornice, brick parapet, sandstone date plaque framed by engaged colunns and original iron railings over botn bay window stacks. Side walls of the structure are largely undecorated. Although currently vacant following a minor fire, the Brightside is in mostly original condition, and remains Worcester's most ornate early apartment house. Built during the first wave of apartment house construction in the vicinity of Main Street south, the Brightside was among the most ex- pensive buildings of its type, costing $40,000 to build in 1888.
jurther, the building's unicue sandstone and terracotta ornament indicate that the building's architects prepared the design to order, unlike a large number of slightly later apartment houses, which appear to have been built according to several standardized plans. Also located on the Brightside's lot is a one-storey block of stores which are of unrelated history and which have no effect on the Brightside's significance. This one-storey cormercial block is included merely be- cause it shares an undivided lot with the Brightside. 10.
